MISSION
|
ALAWs mission is to
help adults with autism form and sustain households, hold
jobs, and contribute to community life, through individual
supports and accommodations.
|
ALAW is demonstrating, through the Autism Pilot Program developed
jointly with the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare's Office
of Social Programs, that adults with Autism/Pervasive Developmental
Disorder (hereafter "autism") can be accommodated in order
to live as valued neighbors, workers and full citizens of our Commonwealth.
Support services and accommodations for the adults in the Autism
Pilot Program:
- are developed in collaboration with persons with autism themselves.
- facilitate their living in regular neighborhoods, working at
regular jobs, and participating in community groups and events.
- are responsive to their individual needs, preferences, culture,
and values.
- foster recognition of their worth and contribution as neighbors
and co-workers.
ALAW's next task is to assure that the services and supports demonstrated
through the Autism Pilot Program become available to other adults
with autism throughout Pennsylvania. This will be accomplished through:
- passage of a law creating an autism services system for adults
in Pennsylvania.
- development of an autism-specific funding stream for these services
and accommodations.
- formation of households through home purchase and rental assistance.
- outreach to other families of adults with autism in our Commonwealth.
