WHAT IS THE INCIDENCE OF AUTISM?
Across the spectrum, autism is estimated to occur in 1 in 500 individuals
(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1997). On this basis
there would be approximately 24,000 people in Pennsylvania, including
both children and adults, who have autism. Autism is more common
in males than females and knows no racial, ethnic, or social boundaries.
The individual support needs of adults with autism range from a
few hours per week to full time assistance.
Adults
with autism often require lifelong community services, individualized
accommodations and other forms of assistance.
